life:
Of all the best-known American serial killers, none has had a greater cultural impact than Ed Gein, the Wisconsin maniac whose reign of terror began in 1947. Shortly after his arrest in 1957, LIFE sent photographers to Plainfield, Wis., where Gein passed most of his troubled existence, and documented the riveting details about his case as they unfolded. WARNING: Some of what follows is highly disturbing.

Derp. I take issue with the phrase “reign of terror” because it’s semi-inapplicable here. Ed Gein definitely killed at least a couple of people, but I’d reserve the word “reign” in regards to his crimes because while they were horrifying—seriously, don’t get me wrong on that—it was not as though he had a lengthy murder streak that people are aware of. (Newton, 2006) It’s not the same as the Hillside Stranglers, Ted Bundy, Zodiak, BTK, yadda yadda…Gein was quieter, less apt for publicity. His fucked up habits were not particularly for show, it would seem.
But I do agree that those habits—significantly more than the murders committed—had an insanely high cultural impact considering the above. Silence of the Lambs and Psycho, among other films as well as the band Ed Gein from here in Syracuse…it’s so bizarre.
When I was a little kid, I became really obsessed with reading about crime and the legal system, so I know slightly too much about serial killers, spree murderers, and etcetera crime statistics, biographies, and stupid little facts. Y’know, reading choices that tend to be first date mood killers (with the exception of a certain wonderful fellah who was just as obsessed with horror movies as I). This is probably one of the bigger things that led to me deciding law = a pretty good career path for yours truly.
